Reckoning

Born from the sultry and smoky 470 clone of Syrah from the ONX Estate, the 2017 Reckoning boasts power and longevity; A trait that is truly unique in a vintage rife with “drink-young” wines. A truly unique vintage for Syrah, 2017 expressed the variety with its standard mainstay of densely layered and dark profile, but with a spicy and floral edge. An unexpected, but welcomed derivation from the norm. Petite Sirah offers depth and platform for the Syrah, while Grenache, Tempranillo, and Zinfandel assist with bright fruit expression on the nose and length on the palate. Rich yet botanical, the aromatics diffuse from the glass with sweet notes of blackberry compote, anise, and fig jam framed by notes of cedar wood, tobacco, and white pepper. A savory undertone reminiscent of a fat-rich filet mignon adds to the anticipation of the palate. The entry is unexpectedly sharp with acidity and bright with flavors of pomegranate and raspberries. As flavors of cracked black pepper, dusty earth, and a medley of black fruits take over, a smooth and moderate amount of tannin and acidity intermingle in perfect harmony making for a long persistence of flavors. The wine finishes densely layered with cocoa powder and a fresh minerality. Drink 2020-2032.
